EPFO notifies interest hike for FY19; here's how you can check balance
The EPF interest rate for 2017-2018 was set at 8.55%, which has been increased to 8.65% for FY 208-19.EPF withdrawal claims for 2018-19 will be settled at a higher rate of 8.65% rather than the earlier rate of 8.55%.Checking the provident fund balance has become much easier now. Rather than waiting for your employer to share your PF statement at the end of the year, you can now simply check your PF balance online.
PF is the popular name for EPF or Employees’ Provident Fund. It is a government established savings scheme for employees of the organised sector. The EPF interest rate is declared every year by the EPFO (Employees Provident Fund Organisation) which is a statutory body under the Employees’ Provident Fund Act, 1956.
Ministry of Labour and Employment has notified 8.65 per cent rate of interest on EPF deposits for its subscribers. Now, the interest would be credited into accounts of subscribers and claims would be settled at this rate," the source privy to development told PTI. Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar recently promised the amounts would be credited into members' accounts ahead of the festive season. Regarding the delay in the notification, he explained that it was on account of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman being "busy these days".
Want to check PF balance online?
Here are four easy ways to do it, provided you have an active Universal Account Number (UAN):
How you can check your PF/EPF Balance Online:

Members of the EPFO can check their balance by visiting the official website of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO).
Note: To check EPF balance, make sure that the employer has activated your Universal Account Number (UAN).
A UAN number is allotted by the Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO). All employees should have only one UAN during their working life irrespective of the companies they change.
Step 1- Visit the official EPFO Website- www.epfindia.gov.in
Step 2- Go to the left side of your screen and click on ‘Our Services’ tabs’ drop down menu.
Step 3- From the 'Our Services' tab, click on 'For Employees Option.
Step 4- Click on the option 'Member passbook' under the option 'Services.'Step 5- Login with your UAN and Password.
Step 6- After logging in, you can access your EPF account.
The government launched UMANG app also lets you check your PF balance.
2. Checking EPF Balance on the Umang app
EPFO provides various services through the centralised mobile app of the government, called Umang. The app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store/App Store.Members can check their PF balance and download their passbook on this app.
Follow the steps given below-
Step 1- Download the application from Play Store/App Store.
Step 2- Open the Umang app on your smartphone and select EPFO.
Step 3- Click on the 'Employee Centric Services.'
Step 4- Click on 'View Passbook' to check your EPF balance.
Step 5- Enter your UAN and click on Get OTP to send the OTP to the mobile number registered with UAN. Enter the OTP and click on 'login.'
Step 6- Select the member ID of the company for which you want to check the EPF balance.
Step 7- Your passbook will be displayed on the screen along with your EPF balance.
UMANG mobile app
UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) provides a single platform to access pan India e-governance services, including EPF details. You can download this app from the play/app stores, from the website web.umang.gov.in/web/#/, or by giving a missed call on 9718397183.
Once downloaded, click on 'Employee Centric Services' and then click on 'View Passbook' to check your EPF balance. Once you submit all the details like mobile number, Aadhaar, etc, you can also claim EPF money through the app and track claim processing.
SMS service
You can also send an SMS to mobile number 7738299899. The message you have to type out is EPFOHO UAN ENG, if English is your preferred language. If you want to receive the message updates in Hindi, type in EPFOHO UAN HIN. Similarly, you can select eight other languages - Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Punjabi, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, and Telugu. However, ensure your UAN is connected before you send the SMS.
